G-G

If you read Rolling Stone or Entertainment Weekly, chances are you’ve recently seen a blurb in their respective “must” lists about a funny new little website/blog called Garfield Minus Garfield (or, G-G). They rave about it and while I’m not normally one to agree with a lot of the “must” lists, this one I have to give a big thumbs up.

G-G is essentially Garfield comic strips where Garfield is absent. The only character present is Jon Arbuckle. For anybody who has ever read deeply in the Garfield universe, you know that Jon is a sad-sack sort, the kind of guy who you pass on the street, hearing him mutter to himself, sensing his loneliness from a distance, and thus feeling a touching type of sympathy for him.

But Jon has always had Garfield as his friend, a stalwart if not completely disrespectful companion who, despite their differences, do seem to share a touching connection.

Take Garfield out of the picture and your left with…what? You’re left with Jon and some SERIOUS loneliness, demonstrating a kind of comic strip nihilism I don’t think I’ve ever seen before, and may never see again.

But don’t take my word for it. Check out the site.

Is it weird that when I see the word “nihlism”, I immediately imagine it has something to do with Frasier’s brother?
